Rain lashed against the windows, a dramatic soundtrack to a cozy evening. Amelia, wrapped in a fluffy blanket, sipped hot cocoa and watched a movie, the flickering images casting dancing shadows across her face. Pure bliss, she thought, the world outside her window a distant concern.

The doorbell rang, shattering the tranquility. It was Ben, his face pale and drawn. He held a crumpled piece of paper in his hand. “I got the acceptance,” he said, his voice flat. “To the program in New York.” A cold knot tightened in Amelia's stomach.
